As students began registering for the upcoming school year, the Casa Grande Union High School District started distributing personal laptops to them.
The distribution is the beginning phase of the 1:1 Computer Initiative, devised by the district, which hopes to give every student a computer they can use both at home and in class.
Before they receive a computer, students and one of their parents have to sign a waiver that lists rules for computer usage. First, students have to promise they will not use the machines to engage in cyberbullying or visit inappropriate websites. They are not allowed to download new software to their laptops, nor may they snap pictures or take videos of other people and save them on the computer. Grace Watson, who is the district's tech support person, can access the students' online activities at any time.
Students will be given the same computer each year, but they will not retain the machines over the summer break. During that time, the computers will be inspected, and any viruses found will be removed from their hard drives. Families are required to pay a $45 fee for insurance for the machine their student uses. If a computer is damaged or lost, a $100 deductible fee will be charged.
Organizations like these can benefit by working with flyer printing companies that can create informative materials to be used as mailers for disseminating information widely.
