Casa Grande goes to the birds

Turkey vultures are migrating from Superior, Arizona to Mexico—at least they are supposed to be—but some have apparently decided to end the trip in Casa Grande instead.

A number of the birds have begun to roost in various parts of Casa Grande, including Peart Park and a Safeway.

It is likely the birds, which gather in groups called wakes, are from Superior's Boyce Thompson Arboretum, or places even further north. The birds usually leave the arboretum late in September, around the Autumnal Equinox, according to University of Arizona scientists. What the experts cannot explain, however, is why some of the vultures only go as far as Casa Grande.

The birds appear to enjoy the city, however, sitting on streetlights and fences, basking in the sunshine and waiting for the ground to get warm enough to create thermals for them to ride. The vultures perform a vital function, as during the hot summers in Arizona, they eat carrion, then they head to Mexico later in the year, returning to Superior in the spring – except for those that prefer to stay in Casa Grande. The downtown and Casa Grande Main Street adopted Buzz the Buzzard for the area's mascot, and Marge Jantz, the chairwoman of the Historic Preservation Commission said a number of metal statues of the birds will be placed throughout downtown, including the Neon Sign Park.
