Casa Grande Airport features a display of art, but little of it has to do with aviation. A group of local artists are setting out to change that.
The Casa Grande Art Association has a subcommittee, Art at the Airport, and it is this group that wants to add new pieces of art to the display already in the terminal. The group is enthusiastic about creating aviation-related artworks, and so is David Reffner, who manages the airfield. He says having aviation art at an airport makes a lot of sense.
Recently, a number of artists went to the airport to photograph, sketch, or otherwise look at and recreate the airport itself, and the aircraft. The Urban Sketchers Casa Grande organized the event; the Sketchers are artists who get together weekly and go to various parts of the city to observe and draw the area.
The Casa Grande Art Association comprises both highly-trained professional artists, and those who just have fun. Some are not sketchers or painters, but create their works using media such as textiles or clay.
No matter what medium they use, the artists will exhibit their works at a show called the “Plane Air” event, on May 25. The name is a takeoff on the “plein air” movement that celebrated artists who painted outdoors. Events like this give participants a great opportunity to distribute their Business Cards to attendees.
