The former market hall in Airdrie, near Coatbridge, is being partially demolished by Hunter's Demolition. The building has remained vacant since it was last used as a bingo hall in the 1960s.
Planning permission for the development was granted in 2011 and local councillors stated the following in the planning application:
“This is a reuse of an attractive, traditional building and the alterations are considered architecturally sensitive. It is a well thought-out scheme which will safeguard the vitality and viability of the town centre and result in an economic benefit.”
The developers of the building may consider working with a printing company in Coatbridge or Airdrie to produce eye-catching Signs or Banners to attract buyers or tenants once it is finished.
It is expected that the complex will contain 23 new flats intended for residential use and that the ground floor will be home to a collection of offices and shops. Developments like this can boost the economy of a local area while helping to regenerate a previously unused part of a town.
Work is expected to continue over the coming months. A completion date and information about how the units in the building will be sold or rented are still to be confirmed. Those who are looking for full details of the Plans should contact North Lanarkshire Council.
