Plans have been put forward to shut the doors of both of Monklands’ police stations overnight.
The proposals involve the closure of Coatbridge Station from midnight until 7:00am, while the Airdrie office would only be open from 8:00am until 6:00pm.
Both stations would be staffed during the day, although residents needing police support at night would be required to travel to Motherwell. The proposals have met some opposition, from the public as well as retired members of the force.
Following a recent review, papers have noted that other avenues of contact, including social media sites and the 101 non-emergency number, have led to a decline in the use of the public counters situated within stations such as Coatbridge.
Monklands’ Chief Inspector Kenny Macleod has said that he understands the concerns that may arise as a result of the changes in opening hours, but that policing will not change at all.
To reassure those concerned about the proposals, he clarified that the actual offices were not closing completely, but that the hours the front counters were available could be changed. The proposals have now been put forward for review, and confirmation will need to be given before implementation.
Printing companies in Coatbridge may well be called upon to publicise the new opening times if the Plans get the green light. No doubt residents will benefit from informative Flyers and Posters being distributed around the area. The police could also use Banners to raise awareness around the non-emergency number to ensure locals have help when they need it.
