North Lanarkshire housing scheme scoops award

An empty home purchase initiative by North Lanarkshire Council (NLC) has secured a prize for its private sector work.

NLC received the

accolade of Howdens Scottish Empty Homes Champion of the Year from George Clarke, a sector specialist and an architectural expert. Catriona Arbuckle, a council officer with housing responsibilities, told Scottish Housing News:

“We’re aware of an increase in the number of vacant private properties which are often in serious disrepair and also of an increase in owners of former council properties asking if the council would buy their property back.”

The judges based their final decision on a range of factors. They focused on outcomes, innovation and excellent practice as they made up their minds. The NLC approach had already brought over 30 vacant properties in from the cold. Cost-effectiveness has been prioritised from the outset of the initiative.

Other organisations have praised the policy too. At a conference hosted by Shelter, the effectiveness of the scheme was recognised. Further, the efforts of those responsible were put on a Corporate Award shortlist for best practice. For developments and awards and other company news, newsletter printing is a great way to make the most of achievements like this.

For Ms Arbuckle, the project has been a success. Further, she hopes that it will develop positively within a variety of communities. Residents of Coatbridge may benefit in the future.
