The site of a former steelworks is to receive £1.7 million and NLC is acting now because a report suggested that the potential of Ravenscraig would gain from swift action. Brochure printers from Coatbridge may be used to showcase the regeneration initiative.
Paul Kelly, a councillor at NLC, stated:
“Ravenscraig is key to the future economic prosperity of North Lanarkshire, as it has the potential to see thousands of new homes, jobs, businesses, retail and leisure opportunities created.”
Councillor Kelly clarified that the site is not the property of the council. Nonetheless, NLC is playing an active role with other partners to make progress. The idea is that a fresh plan can be produced to boost participation by the private sector in the initiative.
Councillor Kelly highlighted the likely importance of funding associated with the Glasgow Region City Deal. If the local transport infrastructure attracts support, then this could add to the accessibility of Ravenscraig.
North Lanarkshire is to be involved in the hosting of a major European sporting event next year. It is hoped that residents will be inspired to get healthier by witnessing the triathlon and the rowing.
The policy of regeneration has already been backed by local spending. New College Lanarkshire was enabled by an allocation of £70 million, while Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility benefited from over £30 million in investment.
