Local student gets prize in design contest

A man from Greenfaulds has received recognition from an institution which promotes enterprise after developing an application that could help people to cope with anxiety or depression.

Prize winner Jamie Shirra has said:

“Each day you take a little snapshot of something you’ve achieved. That then disappears, but once a week the app will display your entries in a gallery to show you all these things you’ve done in that week.”

The application in question has been called Reflect-a-Pic by its inventor. Shirra comes from Greenfaulds in North Lanarkshire, but when he develops his idea further, he may choose to get some digital Business Cards in Coatbridge. He has been learning at a university in Glasgow, and is poised to graduate in design really soon.

The prize that Shirra won was £2500. However, he did not just get money for his efforts; due to his innovative achievement, he also acquired design assistance, facility usage and a relevant learning experience in Dundee. While much of the social media involves the principle of sharing, Reflect-a-Pic has been designed with self-improvement in mind instead.

The work of Shirra has earned considerable praise from two academics. Bruce Wood has paid tribute to the creativity involved in the design process, while Diane Joyce has spoken of the consistency demonstrated by the student. Professor Wood has underlined that the idea could be socially useful.
