Local authorities in Lanarkshire united over fireworks

On Bonfire Night, residents from South Lanarkshire and North Lanarkshire came together to watch a safe fireworks display.

The event was held on November 5th within Strathclyde County Park, which is in the Motherwell area.

If there is a similar official display in the same place next year, the organisers could use poster printing in Coatbridge to ensure that there is sufficient regional publicity for the event.

This year, the fireworks were not the only offering made to the public. There was alternative entertainment, including a funfair, provided on the same evening. The fun began at around 8 o’clock.

The police took the opportunity to remind everyone about the dangers of antisocial behaviour involving fireworks. An officer told the public that only adults were permitted to purchase ordinary fireworks. Furthermore, Chief Superintendent Nelson Telfer said that the police were entitled to search young people who they suspected of possessing items like these.

Retailers are banned from selling fireworks to people who are not yet 18. If they do so, they can face various penalties, including a maximum fine of £5,000, and they may even be sentenced to prison.

John Miller, an area manager for the Scottish Rescue and Fire Service, said:

“In 2013, we attended 131 secondary fires, which included bonfires, in the three-week period leading up to Bonfire Night. This is a huge drain on our limited resources.”
