Glasgow tenement claims Building of the Year title

The prestigious Scottish Building of the Year award has been given to an Edwardian tenement block in the heart of Glasgow’s cultural quarter.

The building received the accolade after undergoing a transformation from a state of neglect into a hub of creativity.

Now serving as a modern complex for Wasps Studios, the building – situated near the Clyde waterfront – was lauded as Scotland’s official Building of the Year during an event held at the Scottish Parliament.

The Wasps South Block was one of 12 projects in the running to win the award, including multi-million pound arts centres, high schools and libraries.

Finalists were drawn from a total of 75 entries in a yearly contest organised by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.

One judge of the Andrew Doolan Prize, which is a national architectural competition, said developers had turned the tenement block from a negative aspect of the local landscape to a centre of invention and innovation.

When new office facilities or creative space is made available, developers will usually advertise the amenities using Brochures and Posters produced through full colour printing. Coatbridge artists and creative individuals from elsewhere in the region could, for the time being, have difficulty securing a place in the block; despite launching in 2012, the new studio building is now full, with nearly 100 artists using its facilities.

Previous winners of the Building of the Year award include the redeveloped National Museum of Scotland and the ultra-modern Scottish Parliament Building in the centre of Edinburgh.
