Former boxer from Coatbridge to run for charity

A former boxer from Coatbridge is set to take on a half-marathon later this autumn, so that he can raise money for a brain unit where he received lifesaving treatment.

Gary Murray is 37 years old and used to box seriously. Seven years ago, the Coatbridge-based fighter came up against Irishman Patrick Gallagher in a bid for the Celtic title. During the 10th round, he suffered a severe brain injury that left him in a medically induced coma. He was treated at the Murdostoun Brain Injury Unit and made a full recovery. Now, he wants to repay that debt.

Murray will be entering the 2024 Great Scottish Run, having chosen the half-marathon event. The date of the run happens to mark the seventh anniversary of the fight where he was injured.

According to a local source, Murray stated that:
“Boxing was my life, and if I had won that fight, there was a chance I could have turned professional.”

He retired from the ring following his injury, but now works as a boxing coach. He has also since married, and told the Daily Record that most of his memory has returned.

When people are taking part in charity fundraisers like this, they sometimes use flyer printing from shops in Coatbridge to spread the word and secure sponsors.

The Great Scottish Run takes place on 6th October.
