Cumbernauld races open to children

Youngsters from North Lanarkshire have been encouraged to participate in races being held during the second half of September.

The hope is that families will be spurred on to engage in exercise after the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. An athlete from the area, Eilidh Child, managed to secure a medal in one event in Glasgow, and this could well inspire others to make an effort.

The event is going to be held in Broadwood Stadium on a Sunday. If extra publicity for the day is required, the organisers may elect to use full colour printing in Coatbridge. People will have the opportunity to run different distances; young children will be permitted to run one kilometre, while older participants will have the chance to run three kilometres.

Sponsorship has been found from a variety of sources. The local authority and the relevant NHS trust have both contributed to the organisation of the project. Booking can be achieved online or by visiting sports centres in the area. Organisers of the event want it to offer a chance for fun for the whole family.

Allan Graham, a local councillor, has said:

“Part of the legacy of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow was to inspire more children to take up sport, and if local kids want to try athletics the 1K and 3K races are ideal.”
