Commonwealth baton relay to pass through Coatbridge

During the countdown to the Commonwealth Games this summer, a baton relay will travel around South Lanarkshire and North Lanarkshire. The baton of the Queen will already have been carried around all the various territories and countries in the Commonwealth.

A council document has recently revealed:

“The historic backdrop of Hamilton Mausoleum will provide a purpose-built stage for around 400 primary age children to perform a series of songs and there will be a celebration of the cultural dimension to the Queen’s Baton Relay event being held in South Lanarkshire.”

It has been suggested that representatives from every secondary school in South Lanarkshire will participate in baton-related activities at some stage. The proceedings will be livened up by the inclusion of a band of pipes. The baton itself will only be within the boundaries of South Lanarkshire for approximately 10 hours – contrasting with the massive journey that the baton will, at that point, have already been on.

After the community events in South Lanarkshire take place on Sunday 22nd January, the baton will be in North Lanarkshire on the day after. It may well be that its presence is advertised by the use of poster printing around Coatbridge.

Areas like Motherwell, Airdrie, Wishaw, Viewpark, Coatbridge, and Tannochside will all be visited by the relay. This may drum up considerable levels of excitement for the Commonwealth Games.
