Coatbridges Shining Stars to receive minibus

Shining Stars, a theatre group from Coatbridge, are set to get a new minibus.

The theatre group is composed of people with special needs and it secured £43,000 following a public vote. It was one of three winners in a televised contest. Stationery printers from Coatbridge can help third sector organisations. The founder of Shining Stars, Katie Slavin, explained how useful the prize will be:

“We’re going to buy an adapted minibus so that young people in wheelchairs can come to classes and travel to performances with friends rather than on their own. It costs a fair bit of money to hire a bus when going anywhere, and now we have so many performances and go out and about a bit more so we’re looking about just now and hope to have it before the summer holidays.”

Slavin has established a class for adults. This group is also likely to benefit from the purchase of the minibus. When it has its own transport, the class shall be able to socialise more easily than it does at the moment. The minibus will also help maintain the group by making it accessible.

Resources from the National Lottery can have a significant impact on what is possible for community groups. Martin Cawley, an executive for Scotland’s Big Lottery Fund, said that healthier and happier lives are created when local people team together.
