Coatbridge to get new electricity substation

A brand new electricity substation is set to be built in Coatbridge, after North Lanarkshire Council set aside a parcel of land for the project.

This substation will be constructed on land at Ailsa Road in the town. The chosen site measures 37 square metres and has been designated as surplus by the council. This follows a request by Scottish Power Energy Networks, as it frees up the land for this organisation to build on. The energy company will be renting the land from the council, and the project will meet an urgent local need.

At the moment, supplies of electricity for Coatbridge come from a section of the grid that is vulnerable to voltage drop. This means reductions in the flow of currents, and it can have serious impacts on electrical devices.

Another benefit from the construction of the new substation will be that local people are able to access green technologies. These include things like heat pumps for homes and electric vehicle charging points.

Local councils need to keep individuals and businesses updated about projects like this. Stationery printers in Coatbridge can help them with that.

The recommendation to classify the land as surplus was approved at a recent meeting. Scottish Power Energy Networks will not have to submit a planning application before they can build.

A date for work to start has not yet been revealed.
