Coatbridge-based college makes green pledge

A college with a Coatbridge campus has made a commitment to the environment.

New College Lanarkshire has set out its ambition to be carbon neutral by 2042. This target will only be achieved if progress is made in all its campuses. The college has buildings in Coatbridge, Cumbernauld, Hamilton, Kirkintilloch and Motherwell. Print shops can be useful when organisations wish to communicate ambitions like this via printed materials.

The college has made its environmental pledge as part of a campaign led by the United Nations. The ‘Race to Zero’ effort is intended to drive cuts in carbon emissions. New College Lanarkshire is now a signatory of an international climate letter for colleges and universities.

Professor Christopher Moore, the college’s Principal, explained his position to Lanarkshire Live:

“Given the significance of climate change to the local economy and wider community, our focus on creating a sustainable, healthy and resilient future at NCL will continue to inform every decision that we make.”

Moore pointed out that a global climate summit is set to be hosted in the region during November. A sustainability working group will also be established by the college, and students will be encouraged to take up green lifestyles.

New College Lanarkshire has already taken significant steps to become more sustainable. Between 2016 and 2020, the carbon footprint of the institution was reduced by 25 per cent.
