Airdrie dog club under threat of closure

A dog training club in Airdrie may have to close its doors to the public after being told by the council that it could no longer hold its classes in council-owned properties.

The dog club, which has been taking place at the Petersburn-based Four Isles Community Centre, has been asked to relocate to other premises following a review of the council's policy on whether or not it should allow dog shows and classes to take place in council buildings – with the verdict being that these activities should not take place on council property.

William McFarland runs the Airdrie dog club. He commented on the situation that the club now finds itself in, saying:

“There is now nowhere else for us to go unless a church hall in the area is willing to let us in. Coatbridge Dog Club are in the exact same position as us. We’re at the stage where we are ready to move on and become a bigger and better club. But if we can’t find another venue, we will find it hard to continue.”

Members of the dog club were recently pictured in the Airdrie and Coatbridge advertiser, holding a banner that reads 'Save our dog club'. Eye-catching ways of raising awareness of plights like this one are often produced by nearby printing companies that offer banner printing services. The dog clubs in Coatbridge and Airdrie hope that the council may change its mind on its policy on animals in council property following a demonstration that is planned to take place.
