The applicants behind a bid to expand Dorchester History Centre will soon find out if they will be able to move forward, with the council set to make its decision.
A plan has been submitted to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council and Dorchester Council for the expansion of the centre. If it is given the go ahead, the project would cost £4.4 million to complete. The motivation behind it is to increase the amount of space that is available for storing archives. Dorchester History Centre is the home of all of the records for the county, but it is nearly out of storage space.
The man who is leading the application is Sam Johnston, who is the centre’s senior archivist. He has stated that the bulk of the money – around £3.8 million – would be used to extend the building. An additional repository would be created. The remainder would be used for redeveloping the existing centre.

When he spoke to the council in support of this application, Johnston said that the work would take five years to finish. He added that the centre would try again with a revised application if rejected.
