Footbridge in Macclesfield to get green repair

A footbridge within Macclesfield is to receive a green upgrade, with recycled plastic set to be used as part of the transformation.

Cheshire East Council (CEC) is keen to protect the environment. As a result, the authority wants to employ used plastic bottles to improve the footbridge. Print shops can often be useful when local changes need to be promoted.

A footbridge in the vicinity of Wistaston has been upgraded already. Brian Roberts, a councillor with responsibility for waste management and highway maintenance, told Cheshire Live:

“The council will be looking at other opportunities to apply recycled materials and the latest project to use this material will be the footbridge across the Silk Road, in Macclesfield, which is about to undergo extensive maintenance work.”

Polydeck is the manufacturer of the surfacing material and the company secures plastic-based foam from a supplier located in Oldham. This foam is a versatile product.

CEC highways manager Ian McLauchlan believes in the quality of the recycled material. He is clear that it looks the part. In addition, he is impressed by the fact that the plastic will not rot. As a consequence, the council should not need to invest as much money as would otherwise be the case.

McLauchlan is pleased that the surface should not need much maintenance in the future. This is in part because weeds and moss cannot thrive on the plastic.
