Praised Irish comedy to play Macclesfield

'The Gap Year', a play by the Irish writer and actress Clare McMahon, is due to receive a run in Macclesfield in mid-June.

The plot involves Kate, recently widowed, childminder Roisin and their close friend Oonagh. Faced with heath issues and the looming prospect of mortality, they decide to have a gap year following the example of their children - but not as one would expect in Europe, Thailand or Australia. Instead, they are intent upon visiting every one of Ireland's counties by means of a campervan.

It is a comedy that sees the three women embark on what turns out to be a life changing experience. The play is an exploration of themes such as a new start, and the challenges posed by aging as well as the strength arising from the bonds of female friendship.

The Gap Year has a six member cast and was developed as part of the Lyric New Playwrights Programme in Belfast. It was first produced by the Lyric Theatre in conjunction with Commedia of Errors and performed in September 2022, then restaged there in 2025.

Tickets will be available from 25 May. Stationery printers can be useful when it comes to presenting a concert or theatrical event.

The Gap Year will run from Monday 15 to Saturday 20 June at MADS Theatre, Macclesfield.
