A research, business and teaching facility might prosper on a site near Abbey Lane. The National Space Centre is based in the vicinity of the proposed scheme and the area adjacent to Abbey Lane was once occupied by John Ellis School.
Professor Martin Barstow, a pro-vice chancellor at the University of Leicester, told the Leicester Mercury:
“The submission of this planning application is a significant step forward in our ambition to develop a regional and global hub to help drive the UK space economy. We’ve been delighted by the reaction to the Plans since we unveiled our initial proposals earlier this year.”
Professor Barstow would appreciate the opportunity to take the project forward with the assistance of stakeholders. His aspiration is that the city can become a powerhouse in terms of space-related skills, research and innovation.
