Project planned for council estate in Leicester
One of the most prominent council estates in Leicester is set to be involved in a community project designed to explore its history, after funding for this was announced.
The New Parks estate will participate in this scheme, which Historic England is providing the financing for. The aim of the project is to get young people who live on the estate to take an interest in their area and discover more about its history. The finished project could take a number of forms, ranging from walking tours of the estate to theatrical shows and artworks.
Historic England has supplied the money for a total of 21 projects of this sort throughout the country. Each one has been provided with £15,000. A spokesperson for the organisation stated that:
When the results of the project are ready for viewing by the general public, banner printing from shops in Leicester is one option that will be available for promoting it.
The hope is that getting involved in it will help the young people to gain more confidence as well as a sense of civic pride.
The start date for the project is January next year.

“The history of the New Parks council estate in Leicester has largely gone unexplored. This much-needed project will celebrate community histories as chosen and researched by local young people.”
