Leicester railway station design plans issued

The designs for the planned revamp of the railway station in Leicester have been made public by Leicester City Council, ahead of work starting on the project.

It is being overseen by the council, alongside East Midlands Railway (EMR) and Network Rail. The hope is that the refurbished station will offer much improved amenities to those using it, as well as providing visitors with a better first impression when they arrive. Much of the money for it has come from the Levelling up Fund that was set up by the government.

One of the central parts of the redevelopment will be to create an entirely new main entrance to the station. At the moment people access it from London Road, but the new entrance will be in Station Street.

There will also be major work done to the glass-roofed entrance hall. When completed, this will have shops, bars and cafes. Other changes will include making the station more accessible, by adding a lift to the ticket hall and a ramp.

Railway stations often use Print shops in the local area to supply them with Stationery from poster printing to leaflets.

Some buildings on London Road will have to be knocked down to facilitate the work, with that demolition due to be finished by the end of the summer.
