An article on the newspaper’s website notes that circulation grew steadily in the beginning, but more rapidly during certain points in history, and it is still expected to have a long future as printing services in Leicester remian popular.
The Leicester Mercury began as a Liberal four page newspaper 140 years ago, managed by James Thompson. It took until after the Second World War for circulation to pick up to over 13,000 Copies, continuing to grow into the 1980s when newspapers were the main source of news, but dipping a little over the past 25 years during the Internet era. The specially set up section of the website has a decade by decade account of how the newspaper has changed and the subjects on which it has reported.
The Leicester Mercury website has designed a page dedicated to the 140 years celebration, describing events from different decades. It believes that the tradition of newspapers, thanks to James Thompson, is still to “campaign on behalf of the community and champion the causes of his readers”.
