The shortlist for an annual comedy contest in Leicester that has been a launching pad for several star comics has been revealed, potentially indicating who the next big names will be.
The Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year is an awards competition put together by the Leicester Comedy Festival, and sponsored by local newspaper, The Leicester Mercury. Those in the running to claim the prize are Vittorio Angelone, Shalaka Kurup, Sergi Polo, Rahul Somia, Mary Flanigan, Josephine Lacey, Freya McGhee and Daniel Petrie.
This is a highly prestigious award, with previous winners including the likes of Johnny Vegas, Rhod Gilbert and Jason Manford. The host for the final of the competition, where all of the shortlisted comics will perform, is set to be Sikisa. It will be held towards the end of the comedy festival.

In addition to the main Comedian of the Year contenders, the shortlist for the UK Pun Championships has also been announced. Lee Brace, Kat Molinari, Pauline Eyre and Cosmic Kat are among those who are in the running.
