Dubbed the world’s shortest motorway, the road consists of three lanes painted on a section of Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground’s airstrip, which ranks among the UK’s longest.
A training facility has been set up at the site, and the agency now has six 4x4 vehicles based there.
While the field has been used by the Highways Agency for several months, the stretch was extended to its current length just recently.
According to the Leicester Mercury, Bruntingthorpe’s business development general manager, Paul Atkin, said the mock strip of road serves as a “realistic” motorway, adding:
“[It has the] advantage of a nearby fully-equipped classroom with all the usual facilities, so there's no travelling or delay for the officers, as they leave the classroom theory lessons for practical towing exercises on the motorway.
"To help the Highways Agency we provided a selection of vehicles to act as the stranded victims of motorway breakdowns and collisions."
Although officers at the agency are still required to finish their course on an actual motorway, the majority of their training can be undertaken at Bruntingthorpe.
Speaking further, Atkin said that a number of enquiries had been made by other organisations regarding the new facility.
