Moose Jaw fest to showcase local films

Moose Jaw will have its own film festival launching at the end of the month, aiming to provide a spotlight for local creators.

The inaugural Moose Jaw Film Festival will be a one-day event consisting of four “block” screenings and an awards ceremony. The blocks will include short films, documentary shorts, television episodes, music videos, and one feature film, #vanlife. Unlike other film festivals held in the province, this event is dedicated solely to the work of film and television professionals from within Saskatchewan.

A jury consisting of local producers and critics will crown the best of the films shown in categories like Best Experimental Film, Best Children’s Production, Best Performance, and the coveted Best of Festival Award. Attendees can also vote on the Audience Choice Award. Jury members include Moose Jaw director Jeff Beesley and Danish-American actor and director Danica Jensen.

Featured short films include “DOOMED”, “Building Nations: The Peter Chapman Band” and “We Were Broncos.” The festival also includes the Vertical Shorts challenge, inviting any Saskatchewan resident to create a short film on their phone in the vertical orientation familiar from social media. Festivals like this often use methods like poster printing and online advertising to help attract local movie lovers and introduce them to new talent.

The 2026 Moose Jaw Film Festival will take place at the Mae Wilson Theatre on February 28.
