The Library will be offering a day full of special programming, highlighting this year’s theme of “Make mealtime family learning time.” Past events have included readings of officially designated English and French-language theme Books for this year. These events are livestreamed to provide access for those unable to attend in person, and there will be programming for both school-age and younger children.
Family Literacy Day has been celebrated in Canada since 1999 and is organized through the Life Literacy Canada organization. The organization says that the event aims to highlight the importance of everyday family literacy:
“Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well.”
The Province of Saskatchewan has made official proclamations to recognize the day in both French and English, and provided online resources for families. Other participating organizations have included the Moose Jaw Literacy Network. Educational events like this often use brochure printing and visual displays to help convey information and increase engagement.
The 2026 Family Literacy Day events in Moose Jaw will take place at the Moose Jaw Public Library on January 27.
