The National Farmers Union of Ontario Local 305, which represents growers in the Greater Toronto Area, will be holding its Spring Soil Soiree event in Downsview this May, highlighting the impact of regenerative farming.
The meeting will feature a screening of the documentary Common Ground, which deals with the practice of regenerative farming to improve soil health and environmental sustainability. This will be followed by performance artist Dale Colleen Hamilton’s one-woman show She Won’t Come Home From the Field, which also deals with climate solutions as well as life on the farm. The goal is to encourage conversation and professional education among those in the agricultural sector. Professional events like this often use methods like poster printing and other visual tools to help communicate information.
The trappings of the event will harken back to Downsview’s agricultural origins, taking place outdoors in an unheated barn, with visitors – including “farmers, growers and eaters” -- encouraged to dress for the weather. There will be snacks provided, but guests are encouraged to bring their own food as well as folding chairs. The event is co-sponsored by Crooked Farmz and Zawadi Farm, with an opportunity to tour the current agricultural activity in the Downsview Park area before the meeting starts.
The 2025 Spring Soil Soiree will take place at Downsview Park on the evening of May 28.
