Downsview event to promote nature awareness

Downsview Park will look to kick off its 2026 series of nature appreciation events with the seminar “Pause and Presence: An Introduction to Forest Bathing”.

The afternoon event will feature both an indoor presentation and a guided hike through the park. This programming will be focused on the principle of “forest bathing”, a Japanese concept that involves slowing down to focus on the details of nature, not literal bathing.

The talk portion will be led by Emily Pleasance, a Registered Psychotherapist and certified Nature & Forest Therapy Guide. Topics will include how connecting with nature supports neurological balance and emotional regulation. Promotional material for the event says that:

“Together, we will explore what it means to move beyond seeing nature as a backdrop for relaxation and instead recognize it as a living companion and teacher in our pursuit of well-being.”

Pleasance will also lead a nature walk with an emphasis on the history of the land and connecting to nature with all senses. Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly for the January weather, but the slow walk will be accessible to all ages and experience levels. Natural education events like this often use visual guides like brochure printing to provide information.

“Pause and Presence” will take place on the afternoon of January 10 at Downsview Park. Registration is required in advance, and can be done separately for the talk and walk.
