Downsview subway station more welcoming to cyclists

Ten subway stations across Toronto, including Downsview, have received an upgrade that will make them friendlier to those who choose to cycle instead of drive.

The stops have each seen the instalment of a new bike repair station that will allow cyclists to keep their bikes in top shape. Acceding to the Chair of the TTC, Josh Colle, the goal is to create an environment that promotes the use of bikes and also public transit. This includes spaces for parking or storing bicycles along with the facilities that will allow cyclists to perform minor repairs.

The subway stops that have received this upgrade include Davisville, Downsview, Bathurst, Dupont, Kipling, Finch, Kennedy, Keele, Pape and Spadina. These were chosen based upon how much bike traffic and trails exist in the surrounding area, how much bicycle parking there already is and also if there was enough space to accommodate the new facilities. A Print company can make Signs that let users of the transit system know where the repair stations are located in each of them and also how to make the best use of them.

Mr. Colle noted that the goal is for each subway station to eventually have its own repair stop. The TTC will watch how well the current ones last through the winter to determine if their design needs any improvements.

These “first aid” stations for bikes all include a selection of Allen keys, wrenches, screwdrivers, a wheel chock and also a tire pump.
