New senior caregiver support program launched

A stress relief program focused on the needs of working individuals providing assistance to seniors was recently launched in the Mississauga and Brampton area by Home Instead Senior Care.

The new program, called Daughters in the Workplace, is in response to research reported by Statistics Canada showing that two thirds of caregivers for elderly relatives are women. Daughters of seniors spend on average 20 hours per week caring for their parent, which includes personal care routines like dressing and bathing.

A survey conducted across North America by Home Instead Senior Care reports that 26% of respondents who care for seniors felt it negatively impacted their careers and was discouraged by their employers. Additional results from this study noted that employee satisfaction with their company policies were only 32% for work/life balance, 44% for flexible schedules and 38% for family leave.

The program is designed to help all adults providing eldercare by providing them with free resources, such as Brochures about speaking to their employers and how to best manage their time. Calendars with upcoming dates for support groups and training seminars may also be provided, and those interested can visit CaregiverStress.com to register for the Daughters in the Workplace program.

In the hopes of increasing discussion and removing some of the stigma attached to eldercare, the Help for Working Caregivers program provides employers with information to improve their understanding of the needs of their employees.
