Brampton to celebrate Lunar New Year

The City of Brantford has announced its plans for commemorating the Lunar New Year this January, showcasing Asian cultural traditions.

The event will be hosted by the City alongside local non-profit the Brampton Chinese Business Association, with support from Algoma University. There will be traditional Lion and Dragon Dances by a number of groups including Litmus Chinese Dance Association, Yang Yang Dance Studios, and the Spring Dawn Cultural Centre. The President of the BCBA and Mayor of Brampton will give remarks at the event.

The city will also be hosting a number of cultural “activations” within City Hall. Visitors can learn traditional Asian calligraphy, take photos with displays, and enter into red pocket squares giveaways. The area will also feature free samples of Chinese and other Asian food provided by Mandarin restaurants.

These events are designed to welcome in the Year of the Snake and commemorate the Lunar New Year, which is one of the most important holidays in Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese cultures, along with other parts of East and Southeast Asia. Celebrations such as these are hosted around the world, often featuring traditional imagery of dragons, lions and other zodiac animals on promotional materials, with signage and banner printing often undertaken.

The 2025 Lunar New Year celebration in Brampton will take place on the evening of January 13 at the City Hall Atrium.
