An event has been organized by Autism Ontario that will provide children from Brampton and the surrounding areas who have an autism spectrum disorder with a chance to practice their social skills in a fun environment.
The family skating session is open to children with ASDs, as well as their parents or caregivers and siblings. The entire rink has been reserved for the participants, and it will be “sensory friendly”. It will give children an opportunity to develop their social skills while they skate.
Since only a limited number of spaces are available, those who are interested in participating are asked to register ahead of time. Parents and caregivers are also reminded that they are responsible for the supervision of their child, and are also asked to not wear any scented products.
The skating party, which is open to all families affected by ASDs, will be held at Brampton’s Cassie Collins Rec. Centre from 11:15 am until 12:00 pm on Saturday, November 19. There is no charge to take part, and those who come out do not need to bring a proof of diagnosis or be a member of Autism Ontario. Brochures and other materials that give further information about autism can be distributed during an event such as this to raise awareness and discuss future programs.
