The New Brunswick Highland Games Festival will be returning to Fredericton this July, featuring music, sports and cultural activities from Scottish and Celtic culture.
The Festival will feature competitions and on-stage performances of two traditional Scottish instruments, the bagpipes and Highland drums. There will also be contests for various Forms of dancing, including the traditional Highland style, the Highland Fling, Sword Dance, Seann Triubhas, and group Reels. Athletes can also compete in Scottish “heavy events” whose tradition goes back centuries, including the ancient stone throw, two caber tosses, and hammer throws of different weights. Participants will do eight events across two days, with the best overall performer crowned the winner.
Attendees are encouraged to wear traditional Scottish tartan, kilts, and other clan clothing. There will be a free Saturday Night Celidh with performances by the Shanachie Dancers, Morgan Toney, and East Pointers. Events such as this often use methods such as banner printing and roaming live performers to create a festive atmosphere that invokes traditional culture. The New Brunswick Highland Games Festival date back to 1981 and has become one of the biggest events of its type in Eastern Canada, bringing in dancers, musicians, strongmen and attendees from across the Maritimes and beyond.
The 2024 New Brunswick Highland Games Festival will take place on the grounds of Government House in Fredericton from July 26 to 28.
