The wind chill temperatures in Winnipeg can fall to a dangerous minus 30°C, or sometimes even lower, but some of the area’s residents are determined to make things a little warmer.
Started by Val Paulley, the city’s third annual ‘No Strings Attached’ project was recently held to help reduce the effects of the winter chill. People from across the region hand-knitted and crocheted more than 220 scarves; these were then tied to poles in Market Square and made available for anyone who needed them. Each bore a tag reading “take it if you like it”, and many people did.
Wolsey Wool on Lipton Street accepted the donations, many of which were given anonymously by crafters ranging in age from young teenagers to older seniors. Those who couldn’t knit but still wanted to help dropped off yarn and other supplies, and many volunteered to help tie the scarves.
The event has grown significantly since its first year when 56 scarves were donated. It is assumed that anyone choosing to take one of the items really needs it, and it’s seen as a great way to bring people in the community together.
The scarves were tied in the morning and by the afternoon, more half had been removed. Any that remained were donated to a local not-for-profit group.
Simple grassroots projects such as this can have a really big impact on people’s lives. Print companies often help such initiatives by producing signage, tags, or other printed materials.
