Winnipeg wins Slurpee accolade

Winnipeg has been given the title of ‘Slurpee Capital of the World’ for the 14th year in a row, putting focus on the area’s love of the sweet frozen drink.

The beverage has proven to be a favorite of the city’s residents, whether they are new moms enjoying a refreshment in the maternity ward at one of the local hospitals or a commuter standing in line waiting for the bus in minus 40 degree stormy winter weather.

The 7-Eleven convenience store chain passed on the accolade to the city, and also awarded it with the Slurpee Trophy Cup because of the large quantities of the drink bought each year by city residents. To help celebrate, each of the 1,500 store branches throughout the province of Manitoba will be giving away free cups of the drink, and it is estimated that over 78,000 will be given out to thirsty members of the public by the end of the campaign.

People are invited to visit the 7-Eleven at 3380 Portage Avenue and Rouge Road to celebrate by lifting the Slurpee Trophy Cup and having their picture taken with it. Print companies have also produced large banners to commemorate the event. The cup will be on display at four other locations throughout the Winnipeg area.

The Portage avenue store has the honor of selling the second largest number of the drinks in Canada in 2013. The Slurpee is only available at 7-Eleven stores, where it has been sold since 1967.
