Winnipeg spring cleaners hope to clear winter debris

A big cleanup operation to mark the arrival of spring is currently underway in the city of Winnipeg, and it is expected to take several weeks to complete.

Work crews are in the process of removing debris, left over from the winter, that has accumulated on streets, in parks, along sidewalks, and in other public areas.

The first area that will be focused on is downtown, as well as bridges and overpasses, and regional streets. Collector streets and bus routes will also be among the places that get top priority.

Once the major areas have been addressed, the crews will move on to tidy parks and boulevards that are along major routes. The cleanup of residences will centre on areas where road sand has accumulated through the winter.

Residents are being asked not to park along some of the roads where this operation is taking place. Signs saying ‘No parking’ will be temporally installed to remind people not to leave their vehicles there. Firms that provide printing services will be able to produce this signage to a high standard.

The total cost for the project is expected to sit at around $4.5 million, and over 500 employees will be involved along with 200 pieces of cleaning equipment. It is estimated that as much as 45,000 tonnes of unwanted materials will need to be removed.
