What's Happening in Winnipeg, MB…

Winnipeg residents give the citys West End a spring clean

Thanks to the help of community residents, Winnipeg’s West End area is a whole lot cleaner.

The recent spring cleanup, which has taken place for the past 20 years, saw about 40 people come out to lend a hand in removing litter and other debris that had accumulated during the winter months.

The Spence Neighborhood Association (SNA) served as a gathering point, where those who took part came to collect the materials they would need to get the job done. They were each given garbage pickers for sharp objects such as needles or broken glass, and also bags to put the trash in, and then they headed out.

Along with this, crews fanned out through this portion of the city to gather discarded items that were too large to be gathered into bags. This included bulky items such as sofas and mattresses.

David Heinrichs, who is the association’s environment and open spaces coordinator, remarked that this is a great way for residents to come together for the good of the community as a whole. Flyers can be printed to help promote events such as this to locals, which can encourage more people to come out.

A similar effort, which was organized by Daniel McIntyre/St. Matthews Community Association, was made by those who live in a different portion of the city’s West End.
