Winnipeg families offered sensory friendly museum experience

Families with autistic and non-neurotypical kids are invited to visit the Winnipeg Children's Museum during a time that will have special accommodations in place just for them.

The institution will be hosting a sensory friendly session as part of its Explore-Abilities Access Program. The building is accessible, and many of the activities that will be on offer will be hands-on and interactive.

The session, which was developed with assistance from the Autism Learning Centre, On the Spectrum Therapy Services and Autism Manitoba, will feature reduced sound and lighting levels, as well as extra signage, designated quiet areas and additional equipment, including Brochures written in both French and English Braille, fidget toys, ear defenders and sunglasses. Specially trained staff will be on hand as well. Advance registration is required, and spots are expected to fill up quickly.

Many autistic kids find it easier to enjoy an event like this if they know what to expect beforehand. Stationery printers will be able to supply social story Books and other materials that may be useful for such an event, and they can be customized to the particular occasion or activity.

The Children's Museum in Winnipeg will be welcoming non-neurotypical families for the Explore-Abilities Evening: A Sensory-Friendly Museum Event on Saturday, February 12th. It will be open from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm.
