A herd of deer that decided to spend some time in Winnipeg’s downtown core has moved on to the riverbank, thanks to a few helping hands.
Manitoba conservation reported that it had received calls from people who had spotted anywhere between six to twelve of the deer wandering through the area, including the grounds of the campus of the University of Winnipeg located on Portage Avenue.
Crews of emergency personnel and conservations officers teamed up to encourage these large wild animals to head back to the Assiniboine River where they would be safe. The public was asked to give them plenty of room and traffic was temporarily diverted so that they could safely make their way to a better location for them.
A spokesperson for Manitoba Conservation, Joe Johannesson reminded the public that, should they spot a deer or other wild animal in their yard or on the street, they should call Manitoba Conservation and report it and then leave it alone so that it can clam down and be led by an officer to safety. Poster printing can be used to create promotional materials that let the community know who to call should this happen to them.
Mr. Johannesson noted that the creatures were likely more than a year old, and even though one appeared to have an injury to its leg, it was still able to keep up with the rest. He said this happens quiet commonly with deer.
