The 46th annual Festival Du Voyageur was recently held in Winnipeg, and it involved a wide range of activities.
The festival celebrates both Franco-Manitoban and Metis culture, and there were many opportunities for attendees to experience live musical performances, food, and film, as well as different contests such as a jigging contest, a beard competition, and even a mascot challenge.
It was kicked off by a Torch Light Walk, which started at the Canadian Museum of Human Rights and wound its way to Voyageur Park, where the opening ceremonies for the festival took place.
Last year, the celebration attracted over 10,000 visitors, and this year also saw many people coming out. In one event, which was billed as the ‘world’s biggest kitchen party’ by the festival’s executive director, Ginette Lavack Walters. Fort Gibraltar was open at night for people to enjoy fire jugglers, fire pits, poutine bars, and music played by a DJ.
According to Walters, the event was intended to not only celebrate the city’s Franco-Manitoban and Metis past, but also what makes it so vibrant today.
