New hospital helipad on way for Winnipeg

An improvement to Winnipeg’s health care infrastructure is planned for this spring. It is hoped that this will mean easier patient transport and will translate into improved patient care.

A new hospital

helipad is planned for the Health Science Centre’s Children’s Hospital, and will be built on top of the newly completed Diagnostic Centre for Excellence. It will be the first of its kind in the city, and in fact, the whole province. A printer will be able to design and Print Signs that can be used around the helipad and within the hospital itself.

According to officials, they expect as many as two air ambulances to make use of this new infrastructure each day, and this could help to cut patient transport times by as much as half an hour. The end result is it can allow the hospital system to provide better health care to the local community and other areas it serves.

Cam Heke, who works with STARS Air Ambulance, told the CBC that they will no longer have to stop at the airport, move the patient to a ground ambulance and then make the drive to the medical care facility. This means they also won’t have to transfer an ill or injured person from one stretcher to another, making it a faster and more comfortable ride for them.
