Last month, Ethan David from Surrey won the 2015 Junior Vocalist of the World at the 19th Annual World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) competition in Long Beach, California.
Ethan, 12, was awarded the top prize from among 200 singers in his age group who travelled to the competition from all over the world. A group of 75 judges from various aspects of the entertainment industry saw the creativity of aspiring singers, musicians, dancers, actors, and models between July 10 and July 19. This year’s judges included Pierre Parisien of Cirque du Soleil, and live show producer Anita Mann.
While Ethan’s parents initially told him that they could not afford a trip to California for him to compete, he was determined to make his mark. He sold chocolates door to door, collected bottles and performed fundraising concerts, and was thus able to raise almost $8,000.
Many types of external vendors help make these large-scale events a success, from AV and lighting companies to travel and printing companies.
The competition lasted one week. Contestants stayed in a WORLDSTARS Village, where they met teams from many countries in different parts of the world. The competition culminated with the live global webcast of the World Championships of Performing Arts at the Terrace Theatre in the Long Beach Performing Arts Center on July 17.
A WCOPA licensed Official in each country takes on the role of screening, selecting and inviting contestants to participate in this competition. Visit the website for information about contacting a country-specific representative for the next competition.
