Surrey schedules sensory-friendly swims

Surrey families and individuals alike who have sensory processing issues have been offered the opportunity to enjoy a swim in a sensory-friendly environment.

The city’s four public pools all have Sensory Friendly Swims for the public, and they will take place on various dates in 2026. Admission will be on a drop-in basis, and Recreation Surrey passes will also be accepted.

During the two-hour sessions, the venue’s noise levels will be reduced. There will be no background music or speaker announcements, and the staff will only use a whistle in case of an emergency. There will be paper towels available as an alternative to the restroom hand dryers, and there will be sensory-friendly break rooms on site. Transition times will be clearly indicated, and there will be extra staff on hand to ensure everything goes smoothly.

To make the experience even better for the attendees, sensory-friendly kits have been put together, and they will be available to borrow from the staff. Print shops can prepare a variety of materials that may be helpful during an event planned with additional accommodations for attendees.

These sensory friendly swims will be on offer on various dates at the city’s pools, with the first of 2026 being at South Surrey Indoor Pool on January 3rd. The city’s web page can be consulted for more information about dates, timings and locations.
