What's Happening in Surrey, BC…

Surrey is home to a wide variety of birds, and an introduction to some of these feathered friends will soon be on offer.

The Bird Walks that are on the way for the community will be held at the tail end of the fall migration, and the attendees can expect to see an assortment of species passing through, as well as others that remain in the area year round. The walks will follow the trails at Blackie Street Park, and there are two start times to choose from.

The free activity will supply an opportunity to brush up on ID skills and also meet other birders at all experience levels. Tips for using iNaturalist will be provided, and everyone will find out how they can protect the park’s wildlife.

Those interested are advised to dress for the weather, and that dogs will not be permitted. Pre-registration is mandatory, and the start times are 8:30 am for the adults walk, which is suitable for those age 13 years old and up, while the family-friendly version for all ages will begin at 11:00 am on the same date.

Birding walks and other outdoor activities help members of the public get in touch with nature, which can be helpful in creating community buy-in when it comes to protecting a particular site. Surrey's birders will be gathering for these bird walks on October 24th. The meetup point will be the kiosk in the gravel parking lot. Registration via the City of Surrey website opens on September 1st.
