Surrey survey shows support for LRT

A majority of residents in Surrey who took part in a poll expressed support for developing Light Rail Transit (LRT) in the city.

Ipsos Public Affairs polled 600 adults living in Surrey between January 25 and 29 via the telephone, and found that 80% were in favour of the LRT.

In addition, the poll found that 90% of respondents believe that transportation options will improve with an LRT, while 88% of respondents feel that an LRT would facilitate bringing communities closer together. Finally, 86% believe that it will create jobs due to construction and maintenance of the line.

Not only would these direct jobs be created, but there would also be support services, such as printing companies creating Signs during construction, as well as marketing services during launch events.

Surrey is growing by almost 1,000 people every month and it is projected to be the largest city in British Columbia by 2041, meaning the city needs to keep pace with development and infrastructure to service the population as it continues to rise.

According to city officials, its top capital infrastructure project is 27 km of LRT within the city over the next few years. Compared to Vancouver, Surrey has 20% of the population, but only 7.5% of the regional rapid transit network, which puts its citizens at a disadvantage.
