The Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver is seeking at least 25 residents of Surrey to take part in their In-School Mentoring Program; anyone who is 18 or over and has passed a criminal record check is eligible to volunteer with them.
The In-School Mentoring Program is aimed at both boys and girls between first and sixth grade and is completely non-academic. Volunteers visit during the school day and take part in craft projects, sports activities or just spending time with the child.
Businesses in Surrey can help by letting their employees know about this need for In-School mentors by working with their local flyer printing company to create a flyer which talks about the mentoring program and can include it with the envelope with the next pay cheque. They can also help by allowing their employees a few hours away from the workplace each week; the average time commitment expected is two to four hours a week.
In addition to the In-School Mentoring Program, Big Brothers also offer several other opportunities for volunteers: the traditional Big Brother program pairs a basically fatherless boy between the ages of 7-14 with a male role model; the Teen Mentoring Program matches teens with boys and girls of elementary school age; and the Speaker’s Bureau features volunteer Big Brothers and Sisters who participate in various programs, workshops and media presentations.
Getting involved with Big Brothers is a great way to help your community, as one volunteer said; it is “one of the most rewarding experiences ever.”
