Several events in Surrey raise food and funds for the Surrey Food Bank

It was recently reported that the Surrey Board of Trade gave the Surrey Food Bank $1,764 and 945 pounds of food. The money and food was raised during the Christmas Seasonal Sizzle Business Reception on December 5, which attracted around 400 local business leaders.

Another event which raised food and money for the Food Bank was the Santa Fox drive, which took place from December 12 - 16. Another ongoing food drive is the RedFM drive, which collected non-perishable food and monetary donations on December 23 at the radio station.

At this time of year, the plight of those who rely on the Surrey Food Bank is felt most acutely. The Surrey Food Bank is located in a 7,000 warehouse and currently has four vehicles, along with three distribution centers. The organization distributes 2,000 hampers each week, and a family can pick up a food hamper every 14 days which provides three to four days’ worth of food. Those in the Tiny Bundles Programs for pregnant women and those with children under one-years-of-age can pick up a hamper weekly.

Food drives have become a regularity in Canada and there are special drives held before each upcoming holiday such as Thanksgiving and Christmas but there is a need all year round. They allow those who consider themselves to be more fortunate to help families in their community and ensure that Christmas and other holidays can be the joyous occasions they are intended to be.
