2011 City Awards Program of Surrey

The 2011 City Awards Program supports and promotes “the sustainable development and unique character” of Surrey, B.C. The awards are meant to recognize individuals, businesses and community groups for their outstanding contributions to the future and appearance of their city. One of the awards handed out is the Green City Award for environmental consciousness; printing companies in the city are already adopting green practices with the growing use of recycled papers.

Nominations for the 2011 City Awards program must be received by September 9 and the awards will be handed out by the mayor and city council at a reception on October 25.

The five areas of the 2011 City Awards are:

• New City Design Award – for excellence in city building
• Clean Energy City Award – innovation in energy conservation and efficiency
• Heart in the City Award – for selfless acts of community spirit
• Beautiful City Award – for community beautification
• Green City Award – for leaders in environmental issues

Probably the most important awards for individual businesses are the Clean Energy City Award and the Green City Award. More and more companies are looking for ways to cut their costs and to save the environment through energy conservation. They are looking out for products and machinery that do not put any added strain on our fragile environment. Also, printing companies are moving towards only using recycled papers and recycling their own papers. Organizations such as Canopy are dedicated to ensuring the survival of forests by promoting the use of recyclable paper products; they even keep a Printer Leadership List of those companies dedicated to the environment.
